The LowRider

Featured Tutorial A brief introduction to the LowRider and it's many uses in and out of the studio
Overview Get your LowRider or LowRider Mini, and get your next best shot.

THE LOWRIDER and the LOWRIDER MINI are versatile, lightweight and portable supports for cameras ranging from featherweight to heavy duty. The LowRider can act as a super-adjustable ultra-low shot platform but it can also quickly switch to a tabletop or ladder position. You can place it on the nearest rock ledge for a dramatic landscape shot or rig it with the included kit to your 1956 T-Bird* for the ultimate low-riding car shot. The LowRider is so lightweight you can take it up the mountain on your next high elevation shoot and get that impossible shot you've been looking for.

What makes the LowRider a smooth ride for your camera of choice? First of all, its rugged rip-stop fabric outer shell keeps its shape intact, while the micro-bead fill allows you to position the camera upright, tilted up or down, or even on a dutch angle. The micro-bead fill also soaks up additional, unwanted vibration, making for a smoother ride for your camera than on a hard mount such as a high hat, or the more costly swiss-cheese-plate-on-speedrail hood mount.

Tie down straps secure the camera to the LowRider, and if required, a rigging kit gives you the option to tie-down the LowRider to just about any surface - racing boat, car, snowmobile - it's your choice!

In summary, the LowRider makes any fixed angle shot** more stable and adjustable on a lightweight, durable base that conforms to the shape of your camera. We make you look good. No more shaky sandbag shots. And if you have to move fast from angle to angle, from low to high, especially in tight spaces where a tripod won't fit, this is a great solution.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How does the LowRider work?

The polystyrene foam micro-bead fill of the LowRider forms a moldable support for any camera placed in it's U-channel groove. This tight support prevents the camera from slipping or shaking at rest or in motion. The foam micro-beads also provide shock absorption when mounted on a moving platform, such as a vehicle, cart or dolly. The moldable nature of the bag also means it can be placed on top of irregularly shaped surfaces to provide a non-slip base.

What types of shots can I expect to get from a LowRider setup?

The LowRider will accommodate many shots for which you would normally use a tripod, sticks and spreader. Because of its portability and versatility, the LowRider can easily be placed on nearly any surface to get a stable shot. The LowRider complements your traditional support, by adding a highly portable and lightweight option that provides a solid place for the camera to land. It really shines when unique camera positions and angles are called for, and when your tripod will be too cumbersome to carry around. And, it can offer a way to quickly rig the camera to a moving object.

Some examples of LowRider mounting positions:

  • on a wheelchair
  • on a fence post
  • on an open truck bed
  • on a rock or oddly shaped landscape
  • on an automobile hood or trunk
  • on a shelf
  • on a utility cart
  • on the back of a moving motorcycle

Who needs a LowRider?

Anyone seeking creative flexibility beyond conventional mounting gear can make use of the LowRider. The LowRider is built for speed and is suitable for both fast paced production and flexible camera placement. Camera persons working in the Documentary, ENG/News, Corporate and Prosumer markets have produced more compelling shots by utilizing LowRiders in their productions.

Why might I need both sizes of LowRiders in my arsenal?

If you have a smaller camera with detachable lenses, then there could be a need for additional support when shooting with zoom lenses. There is a recommended maximum total length of 15 inches when using the LowRider Mini.

Which LowRider is right for my projects?

The answer to this depends on the size of your camera. Bigger, heavier cameras require more bag surface area to operate efficiently. Although this is not a hard and fast rule, if your camera, lens, and lens support together are longer than 15", (such as with the Red One or Sony HDW900) then the full-sized DJ LowRider is for you. For smaller cameras such as the Panasonic HVX series or camera setups (body + lens) like the Canon 5D, for example, then the DJ LowRider Mini is a safe choice.

You mention "Dynamic" in your literature. How do you accomplish Dynamic (moving) shots with a Lowrider?

Camera operators often use the LowRider as a replacement for their tripod. But the LowRider is also designed to be attached to any static or moving object. Using the optional mounting accessory kit, you can quickly and easily rig the LowRider to any car or truck hood, roof, or trunk. Wheel chairs, utility carts, floor dollys and strollers can also be used to provide motion for a LowRider mounted camera.

What can I accomplish using my LowRider with the purchase of the optional mounting kit?

The mounting accessory kit is necessary when securing the LowRider to any moving object, such as a motorcycle, bike or car.
